Nash Edgerton is a filmmaker who knows his craft from both sides of the camera from his work as an actor, stunt performer, editor, producer, writer, and director.
Since his short DEADLINE, which took out the top prize at Tropfest in 1997, Nash has directed a number of award-winning short films and music videos for some of Australia’s most popular musicians including Missy Higgins, Ben Lee, Eskimo Joe and The Sleepy Jackson. His most recent short SPIDER has so far played at over 35 film festivals around the world and won 14 awards.
Nash’s filmmaking career began at the age of 18 as a stunt performer. Since that time he has earned over 100 film and television credits on productions including THE MATRIX TRILOGY, STAR WARS II and III, THIN RED LINE and SUPERMAN RETURNS.
Prior to directing THE SQUARE, Nash edited and produced the acclaimed feature film THE MAGICIAN.
Louise Smith has been working in the production of television commercials and feature films for over ten years and established Film Depot Pty Ltd in 2003.
She has gained an international reputation for her collaborations with stellar directing talents including Nash and Joel Edgerton (THE SQUARE, THE PITCH), renowned actor Rachel Griffiths (TULIP, ROUNDABOUT), and internationally recognised commercials director Derin Seale (STATIC).
Her feature film debut was THE RAGE IN PLACID LAKE, which she co-produced with Marian Macgowan.
She has produced many international TV commercial productions shooting in Australia and has a strong connection to the Japanese market.
Her awards for her various drama productions include: Best of the Festival Palm Springs, Best Short Drama Toronto, Best Short Melbourne, Audience Award Aspen and an Australian Film Critic Award.
Joel has been writing and acting for fifteen years. He has starred in numerous Australian and International features with over forty film credits to his name including STAR WARS: EPISODE II – ATTACK OF THE CLONES, THE HARD WORD, NED KELLY, THE NIGHT WE CALLED IT A DAY, KING ARTHUR, STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH, KINKY BOOTS, OPEN WINDOW, SMOKIN’ACES and most recently WHISPER, ACOLYTES, $9.99 and Fred Schepisi’s LAST MAN.
Joel won an AFI in 2002 for his portrayal of Will in the cult TV series THE SECRET LIFE OF US and since has starred in the Foxtel TV series DANGEROUS.
Joel’s first venture as a writer was BLOODLOCK and he also wrote and produced THE PITCH in 2001.
THE SQUARE is Joel’s first produced feature. He was the originator of the story, inspired by newspaper headlines about ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
A graduate of the Peter Stark producing program at the University of Southern California, Matthew started his film career at Icon Productions in Los Angeles. He went on to become Head of Development at Mystery Clock Cinema in Sydney where he developed I, ROBOT for Alex Proyas to direct. THE SQUARE is his first feature as a writer.
Brad brings a wealth of experience and a keen eye for action to The Square with over twenty-five years behind the camera. Trained in the USA, Brad has worked both locally and abroad and first met director Nash Edgerton in 1995 on the set of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU.
With more than 1,000 commercials to his credit Brad has lent his expertise to numerous features including The Crossing, Beyond Rangoon, Street Fighter, Dumbo Drop, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Phantom, The Thin Red Line, RABBIT PROOF FENCE. As a steadicam operator, Brad worked on MOULIN ROUGE, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and THE THIN RED LINE.
Brad’s extensive second unit DOP credits include GHOST RIDER, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, STEALTH, NED KELLY, THE QUIET AMERICAN, STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES and more recently WOLVERINE.
Brad’s debut as director of photography was the seminal Australian film Yolngu Boy. Since then he has been the Director of Photography on SECRET BRIDESMAID’S BUSINESS, A KNIGHT LOST and now THE SQUARE.
THE SQUARE marks Brad’s first feature film collaboration with Nash Edgerton.
Luke Doolan's impressive resume encompasses credits as a director, cinematographer, and editor, across music clips, commercials, shorts, features and DVD extras.
His early days of feature film editing were spent assisting legendary editor Jill Bilcock on MOULIN ROUGE, and working on the editing of KICK, Emma-Kate Crogan's STRANGE PLANET, Samantha Lang's MONKEY'S MASK and THE CUP. In terms of Previsualisation Luke has previously shot and edited on Baz Luhrman's ALEXANDER and George Lucas' STAR WARS: EPISODE III. Luke's DVD extras credits include THE RED CURTAIN TRILOGY: BOX SET, THE MAKING OF BEHIND THE RED CURTAIN and The Making of Featurette for THE DISH and the cult mockumentary THE MAGICIAN.
Luke has been co conceiving and editing for the last four years on Nash's shorts including SPIDER, LUCKY and FUEL, for which he won Best Editing at The St Kilda Film Festival.
In addition to his short film collaborations with Nash, Luke is credited as cinematographer on Brendan Cowell's Europe, First Date, Sold Out, which he also directed, New Skin, Sweet Dreams, and he recently edited David Michod's short film CROSSBOW, and Anthony Hayes' debut feature TEN EMPTY.
In terms of music videos, Luke's credit list reads like a who's who of the Australian music scene including his collaborations with Nash on the music videos of Missy Higgins, Toni Collette, Ben Lee, Eskimo Joe and Pacifier as well as editing videos for Evermore, Alex Lloyd. Grinspoon, and You Am I.
In the last ten years Elizabeth has gained an impressive list of credits including the telemovie PRESERVATION for which she was nominated for an AFI award, as well as shorts such as TULIP by actor/director Rachel Griffiths, and Nash Edgerton’s most recent short film SPIDER.
Elizabeth has also designed numerous commercials and music videos for bands such as SILVERCHAIR, UNDERWORLD, SAVAGE GARDEN and THE TEN TENORS.
A graduate of NIDA as well as AFTRS, Elizabeth’s feature film credits include RUSSIAN DOLL, MULLET, THE ILLUSTRATED FAMILY DOCTOR, OPAL DREAM, GONE and ACCIDENTS HAPPEN.
THE SQUARE marks Elizabeth’s second collaboration with Nash Edgerton.
Tony Lynch’s career in film as a stunt performer spans over 20 years and early on included THE TIME GUARDIAN, DEAD CALM, STREET FIGHTER, THE PHANTOM, IDIOT BOX, KISS OR KILL, THE WELL, BABE: PIG IN THE CITY, IN THE RED, THE MATRIX, TWO HANDS, HOLY SMOKE, and STRANGE PLANET. In more recent times, Tony’s credits have included MOULIN ROUGE, LANTANA, GARAGE DAYS, DANNY DECKCHAIR, STEALTH and SEPTEMBER.
Tony’s collaboration with Nash began with LOADED in 1996 and in over a decade of work together on shorts, music videos and commercials, Tony has not only helped Nash with the stunt aspect but was the producer on BLOODLOCK and cinematographer on Nash’s Tropfest winning film in 1997 DEADLINE.
THE SQUARE marks their first feature film collaboration.
David Trethewey’s film career began over 25 years ago as a unit runner, he moved through the prop department into the world of Special FX and hasn’t looked back.
David’s feature film experience began on THE MONKEY’S MASK in 2000 when he was a Special FX Assistant since then he has added an impressive list of Senior Technician credits on many Hollywood films including, Stealth, The Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Reloaded and Superman Returns.
In 2002 David was the pyrotechnic designer for the Australian version of the TV reality series SURVIVOR. His other TV credits include the American Sci-Fi series, Farscape SMALL CLAIMS and DARKNESS FALLS.
In terms of feature films, David has been credited as Special FX Supervisor on many landmark Australian films including BOOTMEN, THE RAGE IN PLACID LAKE, JAPANESE STORY and Ray Lawrence’s Jindabyne.
David began his colloboration with Nash on the short Lucky. For THE SQUARE, David created a new type of rain rig that is awaiting patent and is soon to become industry standard.
Although originally beginning her career as a hairdresser, Jen, also a successful artist soon needed more of a creative challenge and on the suggestion of a client, undertook courses in Stage and Film Make-up and later in Advanced Prosthetics.
Jen developed her skills whilst assisting on telemovies in 1990 but her first break was in designing hair and make-up for the AFI award winning film Kiss or Kill.
Since then Jen’s career, which spans the last 17 years and a diverse range of film and television projects, has gone from strength to strength. Some of the Australian television series Jen has worked on include Big Sky, Young Lions and Small Claims and Jen‘s prosthetic design skills were evident on the American big budget sci-fi series Farscape.
Jen’s talents have meant that she has quickly accumulated an enviable list of feature film credits including, ROGUE, In a Savage Land, Cut, Sample People, Subterano, Airtight, Peaches, Opal Dream, WOLF CREEK, HEY HEY IT’S ESTHER BLUEBURGER and the USA Marvel comic Man Thing.
Sally Louise Sharpe Irvin has worked in costume design for film, fashion editiorial and television commercials since 1999, starting her career as Assistant Stylist for a Rolling Stones world tour and then as Costume Buyer and Wardrobe Assistant on major feature films such THE MATRIX, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II and MOULIN ROUGE. Since then, Sally has gone on to work as Costume Designer and Production Designer on over 60 television commercials and music videos, many of which have been collaborations with Nash Edgerton. She has worked as Costume Designer and overseen wardrobe departments on six short films and three features: DECK DOGZ, AQUAMARINE, and THE SQUARE. Sally operated her own fashion label in 2001 and 2002 and appeared as stylist on series 2 of Australia¹s Next Top Model.
